The project:
Complete roof renovation
The object of the project is a 100 years old house that requires complete roof renovation. The steps presented next are part of a solution selected for this project. When in doubt or need for more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Step 1: Roof uncovering
Using proper scaffolding, the roof is completely uncovered to expose the underneath structure. The mesh elements of the wood structure will be replaced.

Step 2: Old mesh removal
The old mesh together with insulation cover (bitumen, foil etc.) are completely removed to get access to the old insulation (if exist) or to the base of the attic.

Step 3: Wood boards removal
The old boards are completely removed to get access to the underneath structure of the roof and expose the insulation layer and offering the chance to examine the base structure.

Step 4: Old insulation removal
The old insulation and any other associated layer (underneath foil) are being completely removed to give exposure to the base layer (e.g. plaster boards).

Step 5: Reinforce the beams structure
The old structure of the roof is being either replace or reinforced, to offer a solid support for roofing layers.

Step 6: STEICOflex 036
At this point the insulation material is laid down. In this case it is used STEICOflex 036 wood fiber based flexible insulation for the following reasons:
- Thermal capacity. Compared to mineral wool or polystyrene, this material offers the best thermal capacity. Its ability to store heat leads to delay in temperature transition, offering up to 12 hours delay. This means, the house remains longer cooler in the summer and longer warmer in the winter.
- Similar thermal coefficient as mineral wool and better than polystyrene.
- Better air quality, being 100% from natural wood
- Easy to install, without causing irritations (skin, respiratory)

Step 7: STEICOmulti UDB
Over the insulation is laid down the vapor permeable windproof membrane STEICOmulti UDB. This is a highly vapour-permeable, airtight, windproof, and waterproof. Its role is to drive away the rain and condensation formed under the roofing tiles. Once installed, will protect the roof for many months, before being covered with tiles.
- Wide range of applications. It can be used as an airtight membrane or as a supplement to sarking boards
- Robust and flexible: 3-layer, coated PP nonwoven fabric, high tear resistance
- Special design. Allows the vapors from inside the house to exit, but does not allow the water to enter from the outside.
- Secure membrane bonding with 2 integrated self-adhesive zones
Materials used: STEICOmulti UDB
Step 8: STEICOmulti Tape F100
The overlap of the membranes, where there is no adhesive side available, the STEICOmulti Tape 100 mm adhesive tape is applied. This has the role to keep together separate pieces of membrane and to seal against the water.
- High-performance adhesive tape with special film for joint and joint bonding of roofing membranes, wood fiber boards, OSB boards in combination with Steico multi primer.
- Extremely high UV and weather resistance, processing from -10 C°.
- Highly age-resistant and solvent-free.
- Slotted release paper makes corner bonding easier
- Application: outdoor
Material used: STEICOmulti Tape 100
Step 9: STEICOuniversal dry
At this step, the last layer of insulation is added. In this project it was used STEICOuniversal dry insulating plates.
- 3-fold function: cold protection, rain protection, wind protection
- Can be used from 35 mm board thickness in conjunction with STEICO air-injected insulation
- With wood’s own lignin as a binding agent
- Excellent summer heat protection
- Diffusion-open for increased structural safety

Summary
The roof rehabilitation project doesn’t look only simple, but is also efficient when using the right materials. In this case, the insulation kit consists of three key elements:
- A flexible insulation material that can be easily fitted between the beams
- A vapor barrier membrane that controls the humidity
- A second layer of insulation made of a harder material to be able to sustain the rest of the structure (wood mesh and tiles)
Note: This solution is recommended to the contractors being committed to quality and to the owners caring for their health, their comfort, and their budget.
End Result
This was a house built in 1950. But also the houses from the 1990s are now considered “old buildings” that need refurbishing. No wonder, because in terms of energy they no longer meet current requirements. Using the right solution, old buildings can be rehabilitated, both thermally and visually. Optimal insulation of the building envelope enables an energy level that corresponds to that of a new building. The key advantages of the solution presented are:
- Protection against extreme temperatures
- Protection against noise
- Humidity control
